Gartner’s 2012 Q3 phone sales report is out and according to their figures, Android phones now make up 73% of smartphones world wide. Samsung had the highest Android sales with over 97,000 units shipped in Q3.

“After two consecutive quarter of decline in mobile phone sales, demand has improved in both mature and emerging markets as sales increased sequentially,” said Anshul Gupta, principal research analyst at Gartner. [..] In mature markets, we finally saw replacement sales pick up with the launch of new devices in the quarter.”

The increase in the number of Android devices is something brand owners should be concerned about.  Android is the “wild west” of App platforms and a majority of Malware on the platform uses unlicensed intellectual property. As the number of devices in the wild increases, the platform will continue to entice a growing number of knock-off app developers.
