Dwyane Wade: Winning on All Platforms

The Miami Heat celebrated their 3rd NBA Championship last Thursday, defeating the San Antonio Spurs 95-88. The core players of Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh and LeBron James helped the Heat win the title for the second consecutive year, keeping the Larry O’Brien trophy in South Florida for at least another year. This sustained success for Miami not only increases ticket, merchandise and vendor sales for the team, it also helps to boost the personal brands of superstars like Dwyane Wade.

Piggybacking on his team’s most recent championship, Wade released his first official mobile app on Monday. Titled “Dwyane Wade Drive”, the fitness-at-home app has video tutorials and customized training regiments allowing users to track their progress over the course of the program. Wade recognizes the significance of the mobile marketplace in promoting his personal brand, stating that “apps are so big now, so important…”.

Although there is only one official Dwyane Wade app in the mobile marketplace, IP Lasso found 17 additional additional apps containing “Dwyane Wade”, “Dwayne Wade”, or “DWade” in the title (see table below), all of which appear to be created by unlicensed developers. Possible malware complications, intrusive permissions and bad performance are common among these “infringing apps”. Be sure to double-check details of your target app before hitting the download button—you may be subjecting your phone (and your identity) to unnecessary threats.
