Malicious apps with up to 4 million Downloads Circumvent Google defenses

Check Point Software’s mobile threat research team announced last week it has identified a new variant of an Android malware that sends fraudulent premium SMS messages and charges users’ accounts for fake services without their knowledge. According to Google Play data, the malware infected at least 50 apps and made charges for fee based services without the knowledge or permission of users.

The apps were downloaded as many as 4.2 million times. Google quickly removed the apps after the researchers reported them, but within days, apps from the same malicious family were back and infected more than 5,000 devices. […]

Google Pulls 500 Apps With Secret Malware Plugin

Last week researchers from mobile security firm Lookout revealed that they had discovered at least 500 apps with over 100 million downloads that contained a secret backdoor that allowed developers to install spyware at any time.

The post went on to say:

It is becoming increasingly common for innovative malware authors to attempt to evade detection by submitting innocuous apps to trusted app stores, then at a later time, downloading malicious code from a remote server. Igexin is somewhat unique because the app developers themselves are not creating the malicious functionality – nor are they in control or even aware of the malicious payload that may subsequently execute. […]

More Malware Infected Apps Found In Google Play

Just last week we wrote about a malware called Xavier, embedded in popular Google Play Store apps, that steals and leaks user’s information.

Now comes word that a family of Android malware called Ztorg has been able to “sneak past Google’s automated malware checks almost 100 times since September,” according to a report in Arstechnica.

The report went on to note:

Most Ztorg apps are notable for their ability to use well-known exploits to root infected phones. This status allows the apps to have finer-grain control and makes them harder to be removed. […]

Apple and Google Revamp App Stores

At the recent WWDC, Apple debuted its overhauled App Store, unveiling an all-new interface with a new focus on discovery and “how-tos”. The main feature is a landing page that highlights just one new app every day, which opens the possibility for new and upcoming developers to get huge boosts from Apple itself when and if they’re able to get the featured spotlight.

This week, Google announced the expansion of its Play Store with the launch of  Android Excellence. The new collections will showcase apps and games that deliver improved user experiences on Android, use many of Google’s “best practices”, and “have great design, technical performance, localization, and device optimization.” Android Excellence collections will refresh quarterly and can be found within the revamped Editors’ Choice section of the Play Store – which includes app and game reviews curated by their editorial team. Android Overtakes Microsoft Windows For Total Internet Usage

Android Overtakes Microsoft Windows For Total Internet Usage

According to a StatCounter report, Google’s Android has overtaken Microsoft Windows for the first time as the world’s most popular operating system (OS) in terms of total internet usage across desktop, laptop, tablet and mobile combined.

Google’s phone platform represented 37.93 percent of tracked internet activity in March, edging out Windows’ 37.91 percent.

“This is a milestone in technology history and the end of an era,” commented Aodhan Cullen, CEO, StatCounter.  “It marks the end of Microsoft’s leadership worldwide of the OS market which it has held since the 1980s.  It also represents a major breakthrough for Android which held just 2.4% of global internet usage share only five years ago.”

WSJ:  Fake Goods on Alibaba Hurt U.S. Small Businesses

Alibaba: “It’s a brand’s responsibility to protect its own brand.”

IP Lasso: We can help.

A recent Wall Street Journal article noted Alibaba’s Taobao was reinstated on a list of notorious marketplaces for fakes in December due in part to “the challenges right holders experience in removing and preventing illicit sales and offers of such goods,” said the U.S. Trade Representative’s office, which maintains the list.

The USTR, in its December report, said Taobao’s expedited takedown program “reportedly remains out of reach,” especially for small- and medium-size businesses, because of stringent eligibility requirements. […]

Google Set to Remove Millions of Play Store Apps Next Month

The Next Web recently reported that Google has started warning developers that their apps have been flagged for a lack of an adequate privacy policy.

The targeted apps are generally counterfeit and take the form of a knock off of a popular game, movie character, or any number of major brands. These fake apps turn up alongside legitimate apps, which makes them hard to spot if you’re not doing a thorough analysis.

The Next Web noted:

“One of the most common gripes among Android developers — aside from segmentation issues — is that of a crowded marketplace that makes it difficult at times to find what you’re looking for. […]
